ALFRETON Town put their excellent away record on the line twice in the space of four days.
The Reds are currently unbeaten in ten away games in the league but were knocked out of the play off places down to sixth by Tuesday night’s results.
It looks like they are now involved in a fight between themselves and three other clubs, Harrogate, Stalybridge and Droylsden for the last spot.
And it is Droylsden who are looming large on the horizon with games in hand and the Reds visit the Butchers Arms on Saturday for what is now a massive game.
Then next Tuesday the Reds travel to take on Blyth Spartans for the third time this season and a second clash in ten days in the league against the relegation-fighting north-east side.
Saturday’s game at Droylsden has the added spice that Alfreton have never ever won away in any competition against the Bloods.
Manager Nicky Law is without Matt Wilson for the trip to Tameside as he sits out a one game ban but he has striker Brian Cusworth available again after serving a three match suspension.
But Law's side will be buoyed by their fantastic away record this season which has seen just one defeat for points in 12 games and that was way back on August 17.
Alfretonm will also be aiming for a second successive victory at Blyth's Croft Park next Tuesday having already won there in the FA Trophy earlier in the season.
The Reds have been informed by Blyth Spartans that they have reduced the price of next Tuesday's Blue Square North home league game against Alfreton to £5 for adults, £2 concessions, £1 for under-16s and free for under-10s if accompanied by an adult.
The north-east club have taken the decision due to having a number of re-arranged consecutive home fixtures forthcoming following the recent inclement weather.
Shaking up
Meanwhile, Law was this week shaking up his squad for the crucial run in to the end of the season.
He has put in seven days’ notice of approach on an as yet unnamed Blue Square North player and has irons in the fire for at least one more.
The Reds boss is also desperately trying to get some match minutes under the belts of one or two of his squad and centre back Tony Butler has joined UniBond League First Division North outfit Wakefield FC to get some games in.
And Butler probably won’t be the last player going out of the Impact Arena for the same reason, to get vital minutes in.
The Reds were left frustrated on Tuesday night when the heavy rains of the late afternoon put paid to their scheduled home league game against Stafford Rangers.
Ironically, it was a third time this season that Alfreton have suffered postponements against Stafford, the originally scheduled league game and the Setanta Shield first round tie way back last September also falling victim.
The fixture has been rearranged for Tuesday, March 31, 7.45pm.
Last Saturday the Reds saw their five match winning league run ended by Blyth Spartans at the Impact Arena although Nicky Law's side did extend their unbeaten run to seven games after a 1-1 draw. Martin McIntosh put the Reds ahead from the penalty spot on 28 minutes but Chris McCabe equalised a minute later.
Transport
ATFC Supporters’ Association transport to Droylsden departs at 10.45am and at 3.45pm to Blyth next Tuesday. Seats can be booked by contacting Mark Thorpe on 01773 836251.
Under-19s
Alfreton Town Under-19s had their league game at Shirebrook Town on Tuesday night postponed due to an unfit pitch. And due to the first team fixture against Stafford Rangers being rescheduled for March 31, the Under-19s game at home to Teversal on March 30 has been cancelled and is awaiting a new date.
